Free guide · 8 sections · 18+How to bet on basketball

Beginner walkthrough: account setup, deposit, finding the in-play stream, placing your first ticket.

1. Pick a licensed operator that fits your country

The first step in basketball betting has nothing to do with picking a winner. It's making sure the operator you sign up with is actually licensed where you live, because a betting account on an unlicensed offshore book offers you no consumer protection, no help with disputes and no guarantee your withdrawal will be paid.

basketballstreams.com partners with two operators that cover the global market between them. Bet365 holds licences in the UK (Gambling Commission), Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Bulgaria, Australia (Northern Territory), New Jersey, Colorado, Iowa, Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ontario, and several other regulated jurisdictions. Stake operates under licences in Curaçao and the Isle of Man and serves crypto-funded customers in regions where Bet365 is not licensed. The "Watch live" buttons on every match page on this site auto-route you to the correct operator for your IP.

If neither is licensed where you are, do not just open an account anyway. Use the BeGambleAware operator checker or your national regulator's licensee list and pick a locally regulated book. The headline odds are nearly identical across the top-15 books worldwide; what differs is whether your money is safe.

2. Open the account and complete KYC properly

Skip this badly and you will lose access to your funds. Every regulated operator has to verify your identity (Know Your Customer / KYC) and source of funds before they can pay out a withdrawal of any size — this is anti-money-laundering law in every jurisdiction Bet365 operates in, and it is enforced more strictly the more you win.

What you need ready before you click "register":

  • Government-issued photo ID (passport, driving licence, or national ID card). Make sure the photo is sharp and the corners are visible.
  • Proof of address from the last 90 days — utility bill, bank statement, council tax bill, or tenancy agreement. The name on it must match your registration exactly.
  • The card or e-wallet you intend to deposit with. Operators generally pay withdrawals back to the same method you deposited from, so don't deposit from a card you don't intend to use again.

Use your real legal name and your real address. People who register a misspelling or use a relative's address are the people who get withdrawals frozen for "manual review" three months later. KYC at sign-up is twenty minutes; KYC after a £5,000 winning week, when you actually need the money, can be two weeks.

3. Fund the wallet — and only the wallet you can lose

The biggest mistake new bettors make is not bet sizing — it's bankroll sizing. Your bankroll is the total amount of money in the betting wallet, and that figure should be a sum you would not miss if it disappeared overnight. Treat it like the cost of a hobby, not an investment.

Bet365 supports debit card, bank transfer, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafecard and several local methods (e.g. Trustly, iDEAL). Stake is crypto-first — BTC, ETH, LTC, USDT, USDC, DOGE, BCH, XRP and others, with credit-card on-ramps via MoonPay in some regions.

Set a deposit limit before your first deposit. Both operators let you cap daily, weekly and monthly deposits in account settings. Pick a number that's a fraction of your monthly disposable income — many regulators require operators to ask, and the answer is whatever amount, lost in full, would not change your week.

4. Read the line, then read the matchup

Every odds price is the bookmaker's estimate of probability plus a margin (the "vig" or "juice"). Your job as a bettor is to find lines where their estimate looks wrong relative to what you can see in the data.

The basketballstreams.com homepage and every league page show you the next 7 days of fixtures with form, last-5 results, run differential and pace tag built in. The This Week page is the fastest weekly briefing you'll find on the open web. Click into any match for the full A-vs-B breakdown including head-to-head history.

Worked example. Suppose Bet365 has Real Madrid −5.5 vs Hapoel Tel Aviv at 1.91 in the EuroLeague. Open the match page on this site:

  • Real Madrid 18−4 (82%) record, +9.7 run differential, "Fortress home" tag.
  • Hapoel 9−13 (41%) record, −3.1 run differential, "Struggles away" tag.
  • Last 5 head-to-head: Real Madrid won all 5 by an average of 11.2 points.

The handicap of −5.5 is meaningfully softer than the average historic margin (11.2). Real Madrid's home strength tag and the away side's struggles both point the same way. This is the kind of line where a basic data read disagrees with the price by enough to bet — and where a casual punter who only looks at "odds" misses the read.

5. Pick a market that fits the read you actually have

You've identified a spot. Don't reflexively bet the money line — pick the market that pays you most for what you actually believe.

What you believeBest marketWhy
Team A wins, no view on marginMoney line / 2-wayPure binary. Avoid 3-way unless it's a regulation-only market with a serious draw chance (rare in basketball).
Team A wins comfortablyAsian Handicap −X.5You get a better price than money line. The .5 line removes any push risk.

Total points likely high (or low)Over / UnderPace-driven. Both Up-tempo teams = lean over; both Slow teams = lean under.
Specific player goes over a statPlayer prop (points / assists / rebounds)Best market when a starter is out and a backup's line hasn't moved enough.
Quarter or half-specific readQ1 spread / 1H totalLimits are smaller, lines are softer than full-game.

Don't bet four markets on the same game because you "like" the game. Pick the one that pays the most for your actual read.

6. Stake sizing: 1–2% of bankroll, no exceptions

This is the section every new bettor reads, agrees with, and ignores. Don't.

Pick a unit size of 1% of your starting bankroll. Bet 1 unit on standard plays and 2 units on your strongest reads. Never deviate.

Why it matters. A 55%-winning bettor at standard −110 odds (1.91) has a positive expectation of about 5%. But variance is brutal: a 200-bet sample at 55% will see a 10-bet losing streak roughly once and a 7-bet losing streak nearly every season. If you size at 10% per bet, a 10-bet losing streak wipes out 65% of your bankroll. At 1%, the same losing streak costs 10% — survivable, recoverable, and statistically expected. Kelly Criterion bettors size more aggressively, but for new bettors, fractional Kelly (¼ Kelly or flat 1%) is the only sane approach.

Worked example — bankroll £500

1 unit = £5. Standard play = £5. Strong-read play = £10 (2u). Maximum exposure on any single game = 2 units. After 100 bets, re-evaluate the unit size. If the bankroll is £700, your new 1-unit is £7. If it's £350, your new unit is £3.50. The unit always tracks the bankroll, never your mood.

7. Track every bet — your log is the only honest scoreboard

Memory lies. You will remember the £80 hit on a Friday night and forget the four £5 losses on Tuesday. The fix is a bet log.

Whatever tool — Notion, Google Sheets, a betting tracker app — log the same fields every time:

  • Date / time of the bet (and of the game)
  • League / matchup
  • Market (e.g. AH −3.5)
  • Odds at the time you placed the bet
  • Stake in units, not just currency
  • Closing line at tip-off (closing-line value tracking — the single best long-term predictor of profit)
  • Result and P&L in units
  • One-sentence read — why you placed the bet

After 100 bets, look at your hit rate by market. Most bettors discover they're +EV on Asian handicaps and −EV on parlays. The data is the answer, but only if you write it down.

8. Know when not to bet

The skill that separates the long-term profitable from the long-term losing is the willingness to skip a slate. Most nights have one or two bettable spots. The rest is variance.

Don't bet because you're bored. Don't bet to chase yesterday's loss. Don't increase your stake because you "feel" the game. Don't bet four parlays on a 12-game NBA night because you don't have a single confident read on any single game. Run discipline for 90 days and your P&L will look unrecognisable from your first month.

Frequently asked questions

Is online basketball betting legal in my country?

Online sports betting is legal and regulated in the UK, Ireland, most EU member states (Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Bulgaria, Romania), Australia, New Zealand, Canada (provincial), 30+ US states, most of Latin America (Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Chile, Peru), South Africa, and Nigeria. It is illegal or restricted in some US states (e.g. Texas, California as of 2026), much of South-East Asia (excluding the Philippines), most of the Middle East, and parts of Africa. Always check your national regulator's licensee list before opening an account.

How much money do I need to start betting on basketball?

Most regulated operators have a minimum first deposit of £/$/€10–20, with a minimum stake of £/$/€0.10–1.00 per bet. Realistically, a starting bankroll of £/$/€100–500 lets you size at 1% per bet (the recommended unit) and absorb normal variance. Starting with less is fine — just keep the unit proportional and resist the urge to size up after a loss.

What's the difference between Bet365 and Stake?

Bet365 is licensed across the regulated EU, UK, AU, CA and 25+ US states; supports card, bank transfer, e-wallet and (in some regions) Apple Pay; offers the deepest range of basketball markets and the most reliable in-play streams. Stake is crypto-first, operates under Curaçao and IOM licences, serves customers in regions where Bet365 is not licensed, and offers competitive low-vig pricing. Use whichever is licensed where you are.

Do I have to bet to watch the live stream?

On Bet365, you need either a funded account balance or a placed bet within the past 24 hours to unlock the in-play stream. On Stake, fewer streams are gated. Both stream catalogues vary by region depending on local broadcasting rights — some games show in some countries and not others. The Watch live button on every match page on this site routes you to whichever operator carries the stream for your IP.

How do I withdraw my winnings?

Operators generally pay withdrawals back to the same method you deposited from. Card withdrawals: 1–5 business days. E-wallets (PayPal, Skrill, Neteller): same day. Bank transfer: 2–5 business days. Crypto (Stake): typically under an hour. KYC verification must be complete before the first withdrawal — submit your documents at signup, not at the moment you want the money.
